Family Dispute Leads to Shooting

05/09/2013

On Wednesday, May 8th, at approximately 9:35 p.m. the Drew County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to a residence on Hwy 35 East in reference to a shooting.

At the residence deputies observed the victim lying on a neighbor’s front porch bleeding from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper area of his right leg.

Deputies further determined from witnesses that the victim and his wife had an argument and the wife left their home to go to a nearby neighbor’s house and the victim followed her and the dispute continued.

It is known that the 16 year old son followed the victim with a loaded 12 gauge shotgun and walked up on the porch where words were exchanged between him and his father. At some point the gun discharged striking the victim in the leg.

The case is still under investigation at this time and it is unknown if the gun was discharged intentionally or accidentally.

The juvenile was arrested and placed in detention.  The victim was transported to Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
