Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

02/28/2012

While patrolling the area of Highway 35 East in Monticello on the night of February 23, a Drew County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a license plate on a truck that was about to fall off, which ended up being registered to a different vehicle. During the traffic stop, the driver, Olivia Hawkins, 20 of McGehee, told the deputy that she knew the license plate did not belong to the vehicle she was driving. She also admitted to the deputy that her driver's license had been suspended. After getting permission to search the vehicle, the deputy found what appeared to be partially smoked marijuana cigarettes in the door handle as well as a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana located in a side pocket of Hawkins’ purse.

Hawkins was placed under arrested and was transported to the Drew County Detention Facility where she was charged with possession of a controlled substance, fictitious tags, no proof of insurance, and driving on a suspended license. Hawkins was given a bond of $1,235 and was release from the Detention Facility on February 24.
